Man originally dwelt in the presence of God, but because of sin man is now separated from God (Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 5:12). Aside from causing separation from God, the due penalty for sin is death (Romans 6:23). As “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23),” the just penalty for all is death. Not desirous of separation or death for man, God sent His Son to this world to become the ultimate sacrifice for all mankind (Romans 5:8; Acts 2:23; 1 Peter 1:18). Jesus Christ willingly laid down His life in order to provide covering of man’s sin and reconciliation to the Father (Hebrews 2:17; 1 John 2:2; Romans 5:10). Having suffered death on the cross and being laid in a borrowed tomb, on the third day Jesus was resurrected from the dead in order that we too might be resurrected to eternal life (1 Peter 1:3; Philippians 3:10-11), no longer separated from the Father, no longer owing the penalty of death. All that is required of man is humble service and obedience to the will of the Father. Jesus specifically stated, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no man comes to the Father but through Me (John 14:6).”
